Awakening From Coma (Nancy)

The most amazing, miraculous, experience I have had as a Threshold Choir member is singing at the intensive care bedside of a good friend, Bettye. She’d been in intensive care the better part of a week and had been in a coma for three days. Following a rehearsal, Annette and I went to Kaiser/Oakland and sang to Bettye. After two songs, I noticed that the tracings from one of the monitors had started following the tempo of our song. Wow!

The power of musical vibration! It can affect the brain and body without physically touching a person. Hearing is a very powerful sense, maybe the last to go when we’re passing over, but in this case, it was a healing channel. Following the synchronization of our rhythms, Bettye’s body relaxed and after the third song, her eyes blinked and she woke up. We shivered with the witnessing of this rise in consciousness and knew something profound had occurred. Bettye couldn’t speak or move much but I knew she was aware of us. I felt elated. My friend, the mother of two small children, was back on the healing path.
